Industry Sectors

Which sector fits your experience?

Cargo, offshore, tanker and passenger sectors each run on different certification, contracts and pay.

Deep-Sea Cargo

Container, Bulk & General Cargo

The largest volume of sea jobs sits here — long ocean voyages, 4–9 month contracts, and steady rank progression from rating to officer.

→ AB $2,530 / Chief Engineer $10,500+ / Master $12,000+
Offshore Support

AHTS, PSV & DP-Classed Vessels

Rotational schedules, day-rate pay and DP certification define this sector. Higher earning potential for equivalent ranks versus deep-sea cargo.

→ DPO $6,000–7,500 / Master AHTS $9,000–12,000
Tanker Sector

Crude, Product & Chemical Tankers

Higher pay than general cargo for the same rank, reflecting tanker endorsement requirements and hazardous cargo operations.

→ Chief Engineer $9,900–10,800 / Master $10,500+
Specialist Vessels

Dredgers, Jack-Up Barges & ROV Support

Niche roles requiring specific vessel experience. Smaller candidate pools mean competitive salaries for qualified crew.

→ Chief Engineer Dredger $9,900–10,800/mo
FAQ

Common questions about sea work

Full FAQ →

What's the difference between AHTS and PSV vessels?
AHTS (Anchor Handling Tug Supply) vessels handle anchor operations for drilling rigs and do towing work; PSV (Platform Supply Vessels) deliver cargo, fuel and equipment to offshore platforms. Both typically require DP certification and operate on rotational schedules.
Do tanker jobs pay more than cargo jobs?
Generally yes — tanker roles carry a premium over equivalent ranks on general cargo vessels, reflecting the additional tanker endorsements required and the hazardous nature of cargo operations.
Can I work offshore without DP certification?
Some offshore support roles (deck ratings, catering, certain engine positions) don't require DP certification directly, but DP awareness training is increasingly expected even in non-DPO roles on DP-classed vessels.
